Vaya to the Playa - Harmony Science School
Event Chair: The Preserve
DETAILS:
Vaya to the Playa
Program Description
The vaya at the Playa curriculum uses teaching stations at the I-20 Preserve to introduce basic features of ecosystems and preserve history to kindergarten- 2nd grade students. The experience has three parts: a classroom introduction and pre-test, a docented field trip to the I-20 Wildlife Preserve and a final post-test. This volunteer opportunity is for the field trip portion that requires Station Docents and Organizational Attendants.
Station Docents
Each group is asked to select which stations they would like included in their visit from the list below. Upon signing up you will receive a response from the education coordinator assigning you a station and providing you with the curriculum for review. At each station, students will engage in learning activities consistent with the concept and content of each station. They will document their observations and summarize their understanding of the concept in a retrieval chart. In transitions between stations, students will use an Observation Bingo card to report the organisms and features they observe.
- Food Chains and Energy Pyramids
- Human Interactions
- Adaptations
- The Importance of Water
- Ecosystem Interactions
- Abiotic and Biotic Factors
Organizational Attendants
Attendants are responsible for ensuring the field trip runs smoothly. They will be tasked with coordinating break-off group rotations between stations, guiding students to the facilities when necessary, and standing by the gate to ensure the general public is aware of the closure and understands when we will reopen.
- Station Coordinators
- Student Guides
- Gate Observers
Thank you for considering The Preserve for your volunteer work. Your support fuels our conservation education initiatives.
